During school building closures and as we transition back to class this fall, we encourage district and school leaders and their partners to use Attendance Works' online Teaching Attendance Curriculum. Each module can help educators determine the strategies schools will use to build strong relationships with students and families. They can help to identify students who may need extra support to get to school every day.

Staff can access the Teaching Attendance modules at their convenience, at any time they have 30 minutes available! Attendance Works is partnering with Teaching Ready to provide our new Teaching Attendance curriculum series of interactive online training courses so you and your colleagues can learn how to improve attendance in your school. Chronic absence, defined as missing 10 percent or more of school just two days each month! Teachers and other school staff all have a role to play in reducing chronic absence.

Our Teaching Attendance Curriculum is a research-based, educational program designed to equip school leaders, teachers and school support staff with an understanding of the issue, as well as the guidance and resources they need to reduce chronic absences in grades K It can be used to rally school staff to act as the first line of prevention and early intervention and reflect upon how they can integrate attention to attendance into existing practice and initiatives.

Each minute course contains videos, reflections and opportunities to apply concepts throughout. Attendance Works will be using TeachingReady to host its programs covering strategies to address chronic absence.

This is a three-part curriculum, and Attendance Works recommends beginning with Module 1. The universal strategies in Tier 1 should continue to be in place as you implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 strategies. After you have registered and gone through the curriculum, you can also use a specific portion of a module for professional development. While taking this module, school staff and community partners are encouraged to reflect upon how they serve as a first line of prevention through these activities that not only promote attendance but create an engaging, positive welcoming school climate that facilitates learning. We can say at the start of class that we are trying our best to humanize our online class space and encourage folks to help that by showing faces but that it is not a requirement per CUNY policy.
